Unprecedented tornado damages vehicles

August 23, 2008 PARK COUNTY - Park County sheriff's officials say a tornado damaged vehicles and turned over two boats at a campground near Hartsel, but no life-threatening injuries have been reported. Advertisement Viewer Donna Smith first told us about the funnel cloud. She sent us pictures, along with other 9NEWS viewers. A spokesperson for the Park County Sheriff's Office says the funnel cloud touched down at 2:16 p.m. Saturday at Eleven Mile Reservoir. Sheriff Fred Wegener estimated about five vehicles were damaged, including a motor home and pickup truck with a camper that overturned. He says another camp trailer was "completely obliterated." Other vehicles had damage such as broken windows. He says injuries were limited to cuts and scrapes, and everyone is accounted for at the campground. The campground has 24 spaces. Wegener says the complex was about 80 percent full. Campground officials say they had no warning of the tornado. According to the 9NEWS Weather Team, Saturday's tornado becomes the first tornado to ever be recorded in Park County. Tornado records for Colorado go back to 1950. There are now twelve counties in Colorado which have never reported a tornado.
