See 'obnoxious party' that prompted police to arrest 9, tase 1action starts at 3:30 GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Police say an in-cruiser video shows what officers faced as they tried to quell a large party on Grand Rapids' Southeast Side, ultimately making nine arrests and tasing one man. Grand Rapids Police released the video Wednesday, Sept. 30 as some in the community made accusations that officers used too much force. The trouble at the party -- officers say they were surrounded by an increasingly unruly crowd -- prompted police to call for a citywide response of all available officers. Police say the incident started when they were called to a complaint about an "obnoxious party" at a house in the 1900 block of Giddings Avenue SE at 10:49 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. The party involved a bonfire, loud music and a light show. In response, she told them: "I can't tell everybody to go home." Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Terry Dixon said the two officers initially at the scene tried repeatedly to get the woman to comply with their requests. When she did not, and was reluctant to give her name, they decided to arrest her. "Oh no, I'm not going to jail," she can be heard in the video. The video shows the officers putting her against a cruiser and securing her in handcuffs. But she fights against them as they try to get her into the cruiser and will not allow them to shut the door. The video shows lights from bystanders recording the incident with cell phones. As police are trying to close the door, a bystander apparently intervenes and makes some sort of contact with the officers. "There was some pushing and shoving of the officers," Dixon said. That's when chaos seems to break out - at the 3:30 mark in the video - with police struggling with at least two people in the crowd. An officer ended up tasing one man after a woman, apparently protecting him, stepped aside. In audio recordings released with the video, an officer can be heard yelling into his mic: "69, get us more cars!" Soon after, other officers began arriving at the scene. Dixon said a total of eight people were arrested for resisting and obstructing or creating a disturbance. The resident was arrested for "allowing premises to destroy the peace of the neighborhood." After the call for more officers, about 35 in total came to the address. None of the officers were injured. Dixon believes the situation could have turned out differently. "We're very fortunate there were not more injuries involved here," he said. "We don't want any of our citizens to get hurt or our officers to get hurt." Police say an internal affairs investigation is ongoing in relation to the incident. http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2015/09/see_disturbance_that_prompted.html#incart_river_home
