Macrovideo of a 2-cm-long cricket (original)

Watch in full-screen mode for better resolution. I found this very tiny cricket (less than an inch long) in my bedroom, at night. I trapped it into a clear plastic box, turned on some lights and grabbed my camera. I later released it. I was mesmerized by how sophisticated and beautiful the body of this tiny creature is: its composite eyes and intricate head parts, the long segmented antennas and the breathing, hairy abdomen, the spiked legs, etc. Watch around the 3-minute mark how it cleans one of its antennas using its mouth. It you noticed in the wide shot (first 7 seconds of the video), the antennas are much longer than its entire body. That would be the equivalent of a man licking the length of his arm...measuring more than the length of his entire body (replace with leg for a woman). During the wide shot sequence again, notice the long, dart-looking body part located at the rear of the cricket's abdomen. That's no dart (no poison or defense mechanism body part). It's called the "ovipositor", which is a reproductive organ in female crickets. So this is a female. The focusing wasn't always spot on because macro photography/videography is difficult due the very shallow depth of field (it's impossible to get everything in focus in macro mode, even if you close down the lens aperture). It's a known optical limitation in cameras. In macro photography, this issue can be resolved with a high degree of effectiveness by using a technique called "focus stacking" whereby several shots are taken, each focusing on a different part of the subject (both the camera and the subject must be perfectly still during the shooting. The only thing that is moved is the focus ring on the camera lens). The shots are then "stacked" together in programs such as Photoshop to reveal the entire subject in focus, in a single image. Equipment: Camera: Canon Rebel T3i (Canon EOS 600D in Europe) Lens: Canon Macro Lens EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Thanks Japan. Original footage (no grading/post-processing) Enjoy.
